Chapter Ten

Kim walked out of the kitchen and went around the counter, all while making notes in her small spiral notebook.

Engrossed in getting key words down right so that she could remember how to phrase certain thoughts later, she didn’t see Garrett standing right there until she had bumped right into him.

Because he didn’t take a step back quickly enough, collision was inevitable—and not entirely unpleasant, at least not to Kim’s way of thinking, even though the air had almost been knocked out of her.

Had the counter stool not been to Garrett’s immediate right, she would have taken him down, most likely going with him.

As it was, Garrett barely steadied himself in time. “Hold on there, Shakespeare, you’ve got to look where you’re going.”

Startled, Kim took a second or two to focus. She hadn’t expected to find Garrett still here. Even so, bodily contact registered almost immediately, before her mind was even fully registering just what had happened—and with whom.

The hot sizzle gliding at lightning speed to all parts of her torso at once told her that she’d collided with Garrett. There was no way she could have put it to the test, but she was certain that no one else’s body felt quite the way his did against hers.

She had no idea how she knew, she just did.

Shaking herself free of what would have, at any other time, seemed like an almost ridiculous thought, Kim did her best to regain some of her composure. Embarrassed, she tried to brazen her way out of it. “What are you doing here?”

“We just had dinner together, remember?” Garrett reminded her, amused. Cocking his head, he peered into her eyes, as if he would find the answer to his question there. “Sound vaguely familiar?”

Kim struggled to hide her impatience. “I know we had dinner together, emphasis on ‘had.’ I just assumed that you’d go on back to the ranch, or wherever else you intended on going tonight,” she added, thinking that someone who looked the way this cowboy did most likely had a girl—or two—waiting for him at that Murphy’s place he’d told her about.

“You had it right the first time. I’d be headed off to the ranch,” Garrett told her.

She didn’t understand. “So why are you still here?” she asked again, feeling as if she was going around in circles and wondering if he was doing that on purpose to amuse himself at her expense.

“Why, to walk you back to your hotel room, of course,” he told her.

There was just a little too much sincerity in Garrett’s voice for her to be buying what he was saying. She liked to think that she knew an act when she saw one. “And?”

“And make sure you’re safe.”

Ha! Did he think she was an idiot? Kim looked at him with barely suppressed impatience. “Oh, so you’re walking me to my door, is that it?” she asked as they went out of the diner.

Taking her arm, he gently turned her toward the hotel—she’d started off in the wrong direction, but he resisted saying so out loud.
